Position Summary

You believe that marketing is about making change in the world by driving meaningful action, and you are skilled at tailoring messages to different audiences and platforms to make an impact. You are a strategic thinker who cares about the nuances of our work, and who can translate this on-ground reality to powerful stories and messages that help all of our audiences understand and experience our impact in the world and the values we believe in.

You are excited about having a broad suite of responsibilities, a doer who rolls her sleeves up for ideas and projects big and small. You are skilled at managing up, down and laterally to empower everyone around you – including our CEO, fundraising team, geographic and functional leads – to become more effective at telling our story.


  • Tell Acumen’s story to key audiences and stakeholders to drive action
  • Further position Acumen as an innovative thought leader in impact investing, not-for-profit/philanthropy, and, increasingly, in the broader conversation about how to make capitalism more inclusive
  • Oversee all global marking and communications: messaging and content, including written (blogs, Medium, website, pitches, social media) and video across all our channels and geographies
  • Drive and manage all of Acumen’s PR and media relations
  • Ensure that Acumen’s key leaders are visible and influential externally, both in speaking engagements and articles written for both mainstream and industry publications
  • Provide guidance, prep and support to the CEO and other senior leaders for speeches, messaging, editing and publishing
  • Lead, in partnership with our Business Development and Strategic Partnerships functions, planning and execution of a variety of events to engage our community of donors and corporate partners
  • Support communications needs across all internal geographies functions, working in a highly collaborative fashion and modeling strong and effective internal partnership
  • Lead of team of four direct reports in New York

Ideal candidates for this role also have: 

  • A marketer / communications professional with a strong, visible portfolio of work
  • Proven success creating messages for varied audiences, particularly in translating complex ideas into compelling, actionable narratives
  • 15+ years of work experience, ideally a blend of private sector and social sectors 
  • Big-picture, growth-mindset strategic thinker with exceptional analytical, written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong familiarity with how to make an impact across digital platforms – email, social media, web, social media, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience and success in digital marketing
  • Highly creative, comfortable with ambiguity, interested in big, thorny questions 
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-performing culture – you roll with the punches and aren’t fazed by curve balls
  • High capacity to collaborate across matrixed teams, as well as the ability to exert influence with and without formal authority. Ability to influence and drive change in a collaborative manner
  • Strong network of relationships with thought leaders in your space, and the capacity to effectively enlist and engage leading thinkers and doers to support our work 
  • Eagerness to travel globally across the developing world (anticipated 10-20% travel) 
  • Permanent authorization to work in the United States 


Acumen offers competitive compensation for the international development sector, commensurate with experience. Compensation includes a base salary, an annual bonus based on achievement of individual and organizational goals, health insurance, and an employer-sponsored contribution to a defined contribution retirement program.
