BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER, LEAN DATA

The Lean Data team at Acumen Fund is looking for an exceptional data guru / client manager to join our team as we spin out Lean Data into a new entity. Lean Data was created at Acumen, an impact investor that supports early-stage entrepreneurs who are fighting the root causes of poverty and is in the process of transitioning to an independent entity.

This a unique opportunity where you’ll work closely with one of our biggest clients – the UK Department for International Development (DFID, also known as UKAid) – to coordinate the application Lean Data, across its work with the private sector.

Lean Data is a low-cost, high speed, end-to-end customer insights and data collection service that has revolutionized the field of social impact measurement. Position Description

Reporting to the Lean Data Chief of Impact, the Business Development Manager will play a critical role in strengthening our relationship with DFID.  You will work with stakeholders across DFID’s suite of private sector development programs, as well as our Lean Data project teams, to design and deliver first-class impact measurement and customer insights data services. Projects will vary in scope, sector, and geography; you will work on data projects with large scale infrastructure finance, to start ups, and sector bodies.

The ideal candidate will be part salesperson, part project manager, part data-geek. You will be able to excite people about the potential of better data to help understand and improve social impact. You will run a tight ship of multiple projects delivering to a wide range of demanding stakeholders, ensuring that data is delivered on time. And you will have strong social research and/or data analytics skills being able to synthesize information from multiple projects to harness new insights.

Above all you will be curious and entrepreneurial, a quick learner, resilient and client-centric. 

Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Identification, planning and marketing for Lean Data across DFID’s private sector development (PSD) portfolio.
  • Coordination with wider Lean Data team to plan and execute projects.
  • Analysis of all data collected in the PSD portfolio, including comparison to other DFID funded Lean Data work, as well as wider Lean Data benchmarks where relevant.
  • Development of PSD impact dashboards, alongside our Product Manager.
  • Quarterly written updates on performance, including detail of new insights relevant to current and future DFID programming.
  • Help with internal DFID briefings as requested, and availability for wider internal communications such as presentations and webinars.
  • Proactive development of co-authored blog and formal publications.

Qualifications 

  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience, in one or more of a development agency, social organization, or start-up preferred.
  • Direct experience of sales.
  • Great core skills: problem-solving and analytical skills, communication and collaboration, project management.
  • Superb written communication skills – you can expect your work to be read by anyone in the UK government up to and potentially including Ministers
  • Ability to work efficiently, intensely, and juggle multiple priorities within an entrepreneurial environment where meeting deadlines is expected and comfort with ambiguity is essential
  • Fluency in MS Office; specifically, expertise in Excel and proficiency in Word and PowerPoint
  • Proficiency in Stata, R, SPSS or other data analysis tool.
  • Master's degree in a related field highly preferred (MPA or MSc in development economics, development studies, international relations etc.)

Logistics

This position will be based in London. Permanent authorization to work in the United Kingdom is required.

Depending on the hiring timeline, the selected candidate may initially be hired as a consultant, and the contract will be transitioned to the new independent entity. If the selected candidate is hired after the transition date, estimated at February 1st, s/he will be hired directly by the new independent entity.

Compensation

Compensation for this role is competitive and will be commensurate with experience.
